Algeria and Austria played out a 3-3 draw with stronger home production and a frantic finish

Algeria finished with more of the ball, more shots and more chances to win, but Austria held firm and took a draw in a back-and-forth match. The 3-3 was marked by an agonizing finish in the 90+6' that closed out a duel whose output was even on the scoreboard, but not in attacking volume.

Algeria and Austria drew 3-3 in a World Cup — Group stage match that left a clear reading: the African side produced more, but could not turn that superiority into a win. With 65% possession, 12 shots and 5 on target, Algeria finished ahead in overall volume and also in the number of chances created, with 1.6 against 1.2 for Austria.

Tactical reading

The game had Algeria more established in the opposition half, with plenty of possession and a stronger attacking presence. The 65% possession points to a sustained spell of control, and the 12 shots with 5 on target show that dominance was not just cosmetic. Austria, with 35% possession and 9 shots and only 2 on target, was more selective, but still managed to do damage and stay in the match until the end.

The draw also leaves an interesting gap between what each side created and what ended up in the net. Algeria scored 3 goals from production worth 1.6, while Austria converted 3 from 1.2 chances. That points to a high level of efficiency on both sides, though through different paths: Algeria piled up more attacks and more shots, while Austria was lighter in volume but extremely efficient in preserving the result.

Both formations, both 4-2-3-1, help explain why the match was so evenly balanced structurally. Neither team deviated tactically from the shape, and the difference came more in how they managed the ball and their ability to turn each attack into real danger.

The standouts

The highest rating went to R. Mahrez, with 9.3, and his impact on the match is backed by the 2 goals he scored for Algeria, including the one in the 90+3'. R. Belghali also stood out, with 7.5, author of the goal in the 45' that kept Algeria alive at a key moment. Further back was H. Aouar, with 7.3, in a team that posted several strong performances in a context of territorial dominance.

  • R. Mahrez (9.3): 2 goals, one of them in the 90+3'.
  • R. Belghali (7.5): goal in the 45'.
  • H. Aouar (7.3): Algeria's third-best rating.

Turning point

The heaviest stretch of the match came in the closing stages. Algeria pulled level through R. Belghali at 45', Austria went back ahead with Marcel Sabitzer at 55', and R. Mahrez made it 3-3 in the 90+3'. But the final blow came from Saša Kalajdžić in the 90+6', sealing the definitive draw and closing out a finish full of answers from both sides.

Before that ending, the match had already shown a back-and-forth pattern: Marko Arnautović put Austria ahead at 28', R. Mahrez temporarily equalized at 60', and the finish ultimately confirmed that neither side could hold onto the lead until the end.

The 0 yellow cards for Algeria and Austria's 1 did not sway the match, which was decided by efficiency, volume and a tense ending. The final 3-3 leaves Algeria with better production numbers, but without the full reward, and Austria with a draw that held up more through precision than through dominance.
