Morocco struck early and took a narrow-margin match

Morocco's 1-0 win over Scotland was decided quickly, with Ismael Saibari's goal coming in the 2' . The numbers show a tight contest: more possession and more shots for Morocco, but not an overwhelming difference in what they created.

Morocco beat Scotland 1-0 at Gillette Stadium, and the match was effectively set from the start by Ismael Saibari's goal in the 2'. After that early blow, the game was even in its flow, although the numbers put Morocco a step ahead in control and production.

Tactical read

The statistical snapshot shows Morocco with more of the ball, 59% possession to 41% for Scotland, and also with more attacking presence: 12 shots to 6. In that respect, the winning side finished with 2 shots on target, while Scotland failed to record any. That points to a clear difference in the ability to turn possession into attacks aimed at goal.

That said, the margin was not big in what each side created. Morocco finished with 0.9 in what they generated for a goal, compared with 0.5 for Scotland. The reading is fairly straightforward: the African side did more to win it, but did not build a crushing advantage in goalscoring chances. Scotland, despite having less possession and fewer shots, was not that far behind in overall production, although it fell well short in real attacking threat because of the lack of shots on target.

From a roles standpoint, the formations also help explain the match: Scotland lined up in 4-4-1-1 and Morocco in 4-2-3-1. Morocco's shape looked more in line with that territorial control and the greater number of shots, while Scotland's system ended up being more about resisting and managing a match that quickly became difficult for them.

The standouts

The best ratings of the match also match the result and the decisive start:

  • Ismael Saibari (Morocco, 7.9): besides scoring the goal in the 2', he was the highest-rated player in the match.
  • Jack Hendry (Scotland, 7.7): he was his team's best-rated player on a night when Scotland finished without a shot on target.
  • Lewis Ferguson (Scotland, 7.3): completed the podium of standout ratings, despite the losing result.

The fact that the highest rating belonged to the scorer of the only goal fits a match in which the difference was settled quickly and then sustained more through control than through a flood of chances.

The turning point is crystal clear: Ismael Saibari's goal in the 2'. That strike forced Scotland to change the script from the outset and gave Morocco the lead they managed through to the end. With the 1-0 in place so early, the rest of the match unfolded from that scenario: Morocco controlled the ball more, shot more, and found a way to protect the result.

In short, it was a narrow but solid win for Morocco, backed by favorable possession, more shots, and attacking production that was slightly better than Scotland's. The result does not show a huge gap in the volume created, but it does show enough superiority to justify the 1-0.
