Banfield struck at the key moments and claimed a 2-1 win despite Tigre's dominance
Tigre had the ball, fired far more often and created enough to win it, but Banfield were more efficient and took the match 2-1. The biggest takeaway is the gap between what each side produced and the final result.
Tigre lost 1-2 to Banfield at the Estadio Jose Dellagiovanna in a match that left one very clear reading: the home side controlled almost everything, but the visitors dealt better with the decisive actions. Tigre finished with 68% possession, 26 shots and 8 on target, while Banfield ended with 32%, 10 shots and 2 on target. Even so, the scoreline favored a team that was more precise with the two big chances it had.
Tactical reading
The numbers show a match in which Tigre set the tempo, kept the ball and produced far more attacking volume. They generated chances worth 2.5 goals, a figure far above Banfield's 0.7, and also finished with more than double the shots and a wide margin in efforts on target too. From that standpoint, the statistical picture points to a home team that did more to win.
But football is decided in the boxes, and there Banfield were more clinical. With only 10 shots and 2 on target, they scored 2 goals and took the result. Tigre, by contrast, scored 1 despite much greater attacking output. The gap between what was created and what was converted explains the home defeat better than any other stat: the volume was there, the reward was not.
The shape also helps explain the match. Tigre lined up in a 4-4-2 and Banfield in a 4-2-3-1. Staying within the data, the setup already shows two different approaches: one more geared toward circulation and piling bodies forward, the other more restrained, with less possession but greater efficiency when finishing moves. Ball share did not translate into control of the result for Tigre.
The standouts
The ratings also support that efficiency-based reading. The best marks belonged to Banfield, with the players who directly influenced the outcome.
- A. Balboa (Banfield): 7.7 and a goal in the 6'.
- T. Adoryan (Banfield): 7.4 and a goal in the 36'.
- J. Domina (Tigre): 7.3 and the home goal in the 10'.
The highest rating was for A. Balboa, and that was no coincidence: he opened the match very early with the 1-0 in the 6'. T. Adoryan also stands out, both for his rating and for his goal, which ultimately proved to be the second and the one that preserved the visitors' lead. For Tigre, J. Domina turned in a creditable performance with his goal and his score, but it was not enough to overturn a night in which his team created more than it managed to turn into an advantage.
The turning point came with the opening and then the visitors' second goal. Banfield struck first in the 6' through A. Balboa, Tigre responded quickly through J. Domina in the 10', but the 1-1 was not enough to capitalize on their territorial superiority. T. Adoryan's 2-1 in the 36' ended up being the heaviest blow of the match: from there, Banfield defended a lead built with few chances but plenty of efficiency.
In short, the match leaves a clear conclusion: Tigre produced more, had more of the ball and created enough to win, but Banfield were more effective and took a victory that the volume stats did not foresee. On a night with 3 yellow cards each, the difference lay in the decisiveness of the two plays that settled the result.
