Boca struck at key moments and took a 3-1 win that did not reflect possession

Vasco DA Gama had more of the ball, but Boca Juniors were far more efficient in both boxes and won 3-1 at the Maracanã. With the same number of scoring chances, the difference lay in precision and early blows.

Boca Juniors beat 3-1 Vasco DA Gama at the Estádio do Maracanã and left a very clear impression: they did not need to control the ball to do damage. The most striking stat is that both sides produced the same number of scoring chances, 0.6 per team, but the Argentine side scored three times and held onto a lead that began very early.

Tactical reading

The match showed a fairly clear contrast between possession and efficiency. Vasco DA Gama had 59% of the ball against 41% for Boca Juniors, and also registered more shots: 11 to 7. However, that territorial advantage did not translate into danger volume: the home side finished with just 2 shots on target, while Boca, with fewer attacks, were more accurate and ended with 3 on target.

That is where the key to the match lies: the result cannot be explained by field dominance, but by finishing. If both teams created 0.6 scoring chances, the difference was not in how much they produced but in how they finished. Boca were more clinical when they found space and capitalized on their chances, while Vasco, even with more circulation, could not turn that advantage into real pressure on the opposing goal.

The shape also helps explain the game. Vasco lined up in 4-1-4-1 and Boca in 4-2-3-1, a setup that allowed the visitors to maintain better balance and hurt with fewer touches. The shots-on-target figure reinforces that reading: Boca needed less volume to arrive with greater clarity.

The standout performers

The ratings make it clear who carried Boca to victory:

  • Miguel Merentiel (8.0): besides being the highest-rated player in the match, he scored in the 34', in a context where Boca had already struck early.
  • L. Di Lollo (7.8): opened the scoring in the 4', a goal that shaped the match from very early on.
  • M. Delgado (7.5): completed Boca's podium of strong performances, in a collective display that combined order and efficiency.

For Vasco, J. Rodriguez's goal in the 66' was the only reply, but it was not enough to change a trend Boca had already set in motion.

The turning point

The most decisive moment in the match came right from the start: L. Di Lollo scored in the 4' and put Boca ahead almost straight from the kickoff. That goal forced Vasco to take on more initiative for the rest of the match, but even with more possession and more shots, the home side never managed to turn that into true superiority over the game.

The second heavy blow came in the 34' through Miguel Merentiel, who stretched the lead and left Boca with a margin that was hard to overturn. J. Rodriguez's goal in the 66' opened a small window, but the 88' strike from L. Paredes finally closed the story.

Closing

In short, Boca Juniors won because they were more effective and more precise in both boxes. Vasco DA Gama had more possession and more shots, but the match offered a simple lesson: with the same chance creation, the difference was made by the quality of the finish. Boca took a heavy win in a semi-final defined by their efficiency.
