River beat Racing by the narrowest of margins and head into the Superclásico on a high
El Millonario added another positive result in the Clausura and fully immersed itself in the buildup to the clash with Boca. Without playing particularly well, it took one of the few chances it had and moved back into the race for the annual table.
River won again in the Torneo Clausura, and it did so in a match that matters both for the points and for the momentum. The team led by Ponzio got past Racing at the Monumental and heads into next week's Superclásico full of confidence.
A win that means more for the context than for the performance
Millonario did not put in a dazzling display, but it found just enough to take the result. River won 1 to 0 thanks to a goal from Lautaro Rivero, in a match where it again showed some difficulties, although it ended up holding on to the lead.
The victory also puts it in a better position in the race for the annual table. River is now five points behind Boca and still has mathematical chances of fighting at the top.
- Racing had come off a draw against Independiente at the Cilindro.
- River arrived after thrashing Belgrano.
- The team ended up celebrating a short but important win before the derby.
The Superclásico is already looming on the calendar
The schedule offers no respite, and the showdown with Boca is already set for the next round of the local championship. Xeneize will be at home in the Bombonera for matchday 15 of the competition.
With that in mind, the match against Racing served as something of an ideal prologue for River: it won, picked up another three points, and stood taller heading into the heaviest clash in Argentine football.
In addition, during the match with the Academia, the atmosphere of what is coming could already be felt. The fans called for the Superclásico while the team wrapped up its night in Núñez, a snapshot that made it clear that the focus is already on Boca.
What comes next
River heads into the clash with valuable emotional backing, even if it still needs to improve its football. The next step will be at the Bombonera, with the derby as the main stage and the annual table as one of the underlying tensions.
