River controlled the ball, but Sarmiento held on in its best spell and took a point
A 1-1 draw at Eva Perón with a clear difference in possession and shots, although River could not turn its dominance into goals. Sarmiento struck first and found in J. Contrera the standout figure of the match.
Sarmiento de Junín and River Plate drew 1-1 at Estadio Eva Peron, in a match that left a fairly clear reading: River had much more of the ball, took more shots and created more chances, but failed to tilt the result. On the other side, Sarmiento was much more direct, struck first and leaned on the production of J. Contrera, the highest-rated player of the match.
Tactical reading
The numbers show a match with two very different plans. River Plate took control of possession with 73%, compared with just 27% for Sarmiento de Junín, and also led the attacking volume: 22 shots in total, with 8 on target, against 11 shots and 4 on target for the home side. In that sense, the draw feels short of what River produced, as it also finished with a 1.8 mark in goal situations, above Sarmiento's 1.3.
However, having more of the ball and more shots does not always translate into differences on the scoreboard. Sarmiento was more selective and, with less possession, found its reward at 15' with J. Contrera's goal. That strike gave the match an awkward script for River: trailing on the scoreboard and forced to maintain high pressure in the opponent's half to keep pushing the game.
The development is also understood from the lineups. Sarmiento used a 4-3-3, while River lined up in a 4-1-3-2. The possession and shooting data suggest that River managed to set up more often in the opponent's half, but Sarmiento defended that context without falling too far behind in attacking output: its 11 shots and 4 on target were enough to keep the match open until the end.
The number of chances created also adds an important nuance: River created more, yes, but not with as wide a margin as possession suggested. The 1.8 against Sarmiento's 1.3 points to an away-side edge, though not an overwhelming one. In other words: River did more to win, but Sarmiento did enough to avoid losing control of the result for much of the match.
The standout performers
The best ratings of the match reinforce that reading:
- J. Contrera (Sarmiento de Junín, 8.1): besides the goal at 15', he was the highest-rated player of the match.
- G. Montiel (River Plate, 8.0): scored the equalizer at 71' and came very close to being the main figure.
- Thiago Almada (River Plate, 7.7): completed the podium of top performances according to the data.
Turning point
The stretch that defined the match was the sequence between J. Contrera's opening goal at 15' and G. Montiel's equalizer at 71'. That spell left River pushing for much of the game to find the leveller, while Sarmiento managed its lead with less possession and fewer shots, but without being completely overwhelmed in the run of play.
The draw leaves a fairly clear conclusion: River Plate had more of the ball, took more shots and generated a bit more, but Sarmiento de Junín made better use of its best period and came away with a point backed by the performances of its main names.
