The Estadio Metropolitano de Barranquilla is being completely renovated and will host the final of the Copa Sudamericana between Boca and Atlético Mineiro. The work began in January this year and aims to deliver a venue very different from the one known until now.

A major investment and a leap in scale

According to the official information released, the remodeling involves an investment of more than USD 45 million. The main focus of the project is the stadium’s capacity, which will rise from 43.000 to 65.000 spectators by the end of November.

That jump is no small matter. In a final of this magnitude, infrastructure becomes the main attraction. And Barranquilla wants to be up to the task for a match that will draw the region’s full attention.

What changes in the stadium

The report on the work points to a comprehensive renovation of the Metropolitano, with the focus on modernizing its appearance and expanding its capacity. For now, the concrete data is clear:

  • Investment: more than USD 45 million
  • Start of work: January of this year
  • Current capacity: 43.000
  • Projected capacity: 65.000
  • Estimated deadline: end of November

The Sudamericana final will be played there in the context of a refurbished stadium, with a much larger capacity to welcome the crowd that will support both teams.

Boca and an international finale in a different setting

While Boca prepares for that decisive match, the build-up to the showdown is also adding tension. From the other side, Eduardo Domínguez spoke about the Xeneize’s strength and warned that the team will have to be careful in the final.

Eduardo Domínguez: “We know how strong they are.”

At the same time, attention on the final is not limited to the footballing side. The venue matters too, and the Metropolitano de Barranquilla is emerging as one of the great images of this continental run-in.

With work underway and the stadium on course to receive thousands of fans, the Sudamericana is already leaving its mark before the ball is even rolling.
