Defensa y Justicia were sharper and won the match despite having less of the ball

Unión controlled possession and took more shots, but Defensa y Justicia were more efficient in both boxes and won 2-0. The difference came down to finishing and an attacking performance that ended up being worth more than territorial dominance.

Unión lost 0-2 to Defensa y Justicia at the Estadio 15 de Abril, in a match that left a clear paradox: the home side had 59% possession, took 25 shots and finished with more shots on target than their opponents (7 to 10), but failed to score. At the other end, Defensa y Justicia made better use of their chances and settled the game with goals from J. Gutierrez in the 43' and C. Perez in the 45'.

Tactical reading

The numbers show a fairly even attacking performance, but with the visitors more precise in the final third. Unión piled up volume with the ball: 59% possession and 25 shots are the numbers of a team that pushed forward and spent time in the opposition half. However, that territorial edge did not translate into an advantage on the scoreboard or a big difference in the quality of the chances created.

Defensa y Justicia, with 41% possession, did not need to control the ball to stick to their plan. They took 21 shots and hit the target 10 times, a figure that reflects greater accuracy relative to what they produced. In addition, the split in goal chances was very close: Unión generated 2.2 and Defensa y Justicia 2.1. In other words, the result is not explained by a wide gap in what each side created, but by efficiency in the decisive moments.

The stats also paint a picture of a scrappy match. Unión picked up 5 yellow cards, while Defensa y Justicia received 2. And to that was added S. Sosa's red card in the 76', an incident that intensified the visitors' late suffering, although the team was already ahead on the scoreboard.

The standouts

The highest ratings in the match belonged to Defensa y Justicia, which fits the result:

  • M. Borgogno: 9.0
  • J. Gutierrez: 8.8
  • D. Barbona: 7.7

The highest mark went to M. Borgogno, who led the ratings with 9.0. Close behind was J. Gutierrez, also the scorer of the first goal in the 43', which explains his 8.8. D. Barbona also appears with 7.7, part of a team that delivered strong performances in key positions.

The turning point

The match tilted at the end of the first half. J. Gutierrez scored in the 43' and C. Perez added another in the 45'. In just two minutes, Defensa y Justicia turned an even performance into a clear lead and left Unión chasing the game.

From there, the home side had more of the ball and more shots, but could not find a goal back. Even with S. Sosa's sending-off in the 76', the outcome had already been decided by what happened in that burst before the break.

In short, Unión had more possession and more shots, but Defensa y Justicia were more clinical and earned better ratings for their key players. The numbers point to a clear conclusion: the visitors did not dominate the ball, but they did dominate the stretch that decides matches.
