Vélez Sarsfield and San Lorenzo drew 2-2 at the José Amalfitani, in a match that left a fairly clear reading: the home side had the ball for longer, took more shots and created more chances, but could not protect the lead. The draw ends up being only a partial reflection of how the game went, because the numbers favored Vélez Sarsfield in volume, although San Lorenzo was more efficient in staying in the match.

Tactical reading

The main difference was in possession and output. Vélez Sarsfield finished with 65% possession against 35% for San Lorenzo, and also had more shots: 16 to 6. The gap was also in shots on target, with the home side leading 5 to 2. That points to a game in which Vélez took the initiative, established play more often in the opposition half and piled up more attacking presence.

Along the same lines, the chance-generation data also leaves Vélez Sarsfield in a stronger position: it produced for 1.1, while San Lorenzo generated 0.9. It is not a huge difference, but it is enough to support the idea that the home side created a little more and was closer to imposing its conditions through play. Even so, the final draw shows that territorial superiority did not translate into complete control of the result.

The match also had a goal distribution that explains that balance quite well. Vélez Sarsfield struck first through J. Policella in the 22' and quickly doubled the lead with Maximiliano Pellegrino in the 25'. Two goals in three minutes gave them a strong advantage and seemed to put them on course, especially because by then the home side had already shown greater control of the ball and the shots. But San Lorenzo pulled one back at the end of the first half, with A. Cuello in the 45+1', and that goal changed the tone of the match.

The cards also offer a clue about how the game unfolded: Vélez Sarsfield received 3 yellow cards, while San Lorenzo picked up 6. The away side was more on the edge in that department, which fits with a spell in which it had to resist longer without the ball and with less room to maintain control.

The standouts

The individual ratings match the reading of the game and highlight two names above the rest:

  • R. Auzmendi (San Lorenzo) was the best-rated player in the match with 8.3. His impact was underlined by the goal in the 81', which sealed the 2-2.
  • Maximiliano Pellegrino (Vélez Sarsfield) posted 7.8 and was one of the most influential players in the home side’s strong start, with his goal in the 25'.
  • J. Policella (Vélez Sarsfield) finished on 7.5 and was also decisive in the early lead, thanks to the goal in the 22'.

The turning point of the match came between the end of the first half and the final stretch. A. Cuello's goal in the 45+1' kept San Lorenzo's deficit from becoming too heavy at the break, and R. Auzmendi's equalizer in the 81' settled the game into a draw that would not move again. That was the key: Vélez had done more to win it, but San Lorenzo found the necessary goals at very specific moments.

The finish leaves a fairly clear conclusion: Vélez Sarsfield produced more, had more possession and got into the final third more often, but San Lorenzo was precise enough to take a point from a difficult ground. The numbers show a match with a home advantage in volume and an away side that was more effective in the decisive moments.
